Brief Summary of Unit:
The following is a year long literature unit based upon the Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park. By the completion of this unit the students will have enhanced their oral reading and comprehension skills, have a clearer understanding of story elements (e.g. main idea, character, setting, problem and solution), and refine writing skills. The students will also gain a greater appreciation for literature and a love of reading.

Students will Understand:
The students will understand the importance of word attack skills and sight word recognition to become fluent readers.
The students will understand the basic elements of a story.
The students will understand the basic grammar and writing tools.
The students will understand the use of technology in creating projects.

Assessment Plan:
Growth portfolios - A collection of the students work which they select to show their growth throughout this unit

Accelerated Reader Quizzes - At the completion of each book the student will be required to take a ten question quiz over the book to determine comprehension.

Learning Activites:
Journaling writing using the use of journal prompts.
Creative writing assignments.
Kidspiration webbing after the completion of each book.
Utilizing the Junie B. Jones web sight to explore other activities and books by Barbara Park.
Class power point presentation developed by the class as a culminating activity for the unit.
